Cyclones Fall in Alaska, 6-4

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces (1-1 preseason) prevented a late game collapse as they defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones (1-1 preseason) by a 6-4 final score in front of 3,598 at Sullivan Arena on Wednesday night.

The Aces rattled off three straight goals in a span of 1:46 as Ross Ring-Jarvi, Evan Trupp, and Robert Farmer all lit the lamp to give the home team a 3-0 edge. And despite three power play chances, the Cyclones trailed by the same score at the first intermission. Aces goaltender Mark Guggenberger (W, 21 saves) made eight opening period saves while Cyclones backstop Rob Madore (L, 20 saves) turned aside nine of 12.

The Cyclones got a pair of quick goals early in the middle stanza to threaten a comeback; Dan Eves tipped a shot from center ice that bounced through Guggenberger's legs and into the net. Then, just 1:59 later, Barry Almeida danced past the goaltender and buried his first goal of the preseason at 4:41, pulling the Cyclones within a goal at 3-2. The Aces answered back, however, at 11:26 when Corey Syvret redirected a point shot through Madore to restore a two-goal cushion. The score remained 4-2 in favor of Alaska through 40 minutes.

It didn't take long for the Aces to extend their lead early into period three. Andy Taranto and Spencer Bennett each lit the lamp just 58 seconds apart beginning at the 2:17 mark - making it 6-2. Cincinnati responded shortly thereafter as Mike Embach and Josh McFadden each earned power play goals in the late stages; However, Alaska wouldn't relinquish the lead as they held on to win by a 6-4 final score.

Cincinnati's special teams unit was solid again on Wednesday; their penalty kill finished with a perfect four-for-four showing, while the power play unit converted two times on six chances.
