July 16, 2003 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
The Cyclones fell to the Staten Island Yankees on Tuesday night, by the score of 6-4. The Cyclones' record is now 21-8, while Staten Island moves to 9-19. Staten Island starter TJ Beam earned his first win of the year, while Brooklyn starter Ivan Maldonado dropped his first decision of the season, and fell to 4-1. Staten Island reliever Paul Thorp notched his first save of the year. The Cyclones fell behind in the first, when Horace Lawrence had an RBI double with two outs, bringing in leadoff man Melkey Cabrera. The score stayed 1-0 until the third, when the Cyclones put up two runs.
In the third, the Cyclones manufactured a run on an RBI groundout by Jon Slack, bringing home Andy Wilson. The second run scored on Rashad Parker's sacrifice fly to leftfield, which scored Tony Piazza.
Staten Island answered in the top of the next frame, putting up four runs, on a two RBI single by John Urick, a Carlos Rosario RBI single, and a Tyson Hanish sacrifice fly. They added another run in the fifth on Jared Treadway's RBI double.
The Cyclones made some noise in their comeback attempt, putting up single runs in the sixth and seventh. First on Blake Whealy's RBI double to left in the sixth, and then on Andy Wilson's first home run as a Cyclone in the seventh. However, it would not be enough, as the three game series is now tied at a game apiece.
The rubber match will be tomorrow night in Staten Island, the Cyclones first road game of a nine game swing. Their next home game is at KeySpan Park on Saturday, July 26 at 6:00 pm versus Williamsport.
