Vermont Expos Can't Hold Lead
July 16, 2003 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
TROY, NY --- In a game where both starting pitchers started with ERA's under 1.00, it was the offenses that did early damage.
The Expos jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Tri-City ValleyCats scored five runs in the bottom of the third and went on to a 6-3 victory over Vermont in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Bruno Stadium.
Tri-City starter Jose DeLeon entered the game 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA (three earned runs in 31.1 innings), but the Expos got a solo home run from Lorvin Louisa in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Vermnot added two more runs in the third inning on a Louisa sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Oscar Bernazard.
The RBI single from Bernazard snapped a streak of eight walks in eight straight plate appearances for Bernazard. He had walked in his two plate appearances Monday night in Williamsport, all five at bats on Tuesday and in his first time up on Wednesday. After his single, Bernazard struckout in his last two at bats.
So things looked good for Vermont with a 3-0 lead and Jeremy Plexico on the mound. Plexico entered the game with a 0.73 ERA (two earned runs in 24.2 innings) and pitched two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the third inning.
The inning started with back-to-back walks and then Plexico couldn't get the runner at third on a sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases. Scott Robinson followed with a two-run single to cut the Expos lead to 3-2, then Brad Koman smashed an 0-2 pitch from Plexico over the leftfield wall for a three-run homer and a 5-3 Tri-City lead.
The ValleyCats added another run in the fourth inning on a solo home run from Edwin Maysonet. Maysonet was 2-for-3 with two runs and the home run out of the number nine spot in the ValleyCat order. Adam Seuss and Josh Anderson both had two hits for Tri-City (14-13).
DeLeon (4-0) allowed three runs on five hits over five innings for the victory, while Juan Beltre allowed just three hits over 3.2 innings of relief. Plexico (2-2) allowed six runs on seven hits over five innings, while Eddie Diaz pitched two perfect innings of relief.
Louisa was 2-for-3 with RBI to lead Vermont (5-24), while Jason Tuttle added two hits and is now 9-for-21 (.429) the first five games of the six-game roadtrip.
That six-game roadtrip wraps up Thursday night at Tri-City with Devin Perrin starting for the Expos against former University of Vermont pitcher Jamie Merchant. Vermont begins a brief three-game homestand with the Oneonta Tigers on Friday night at Centennial Field.
