Cyclones Claim 7-4 Win at Toledo

SYLVANIA, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones used a two-goal, two-assist performance from rookie Mark Voakes to claim a 7-4 win over the Toledo Walleye Saturday night. Jimmy Kilpatrick added a pair of goals and an assist to aid the cause. The Cyclones close the preseason with a 1-1 record.

The teams exchanged a pair of goals each and after a period of play the game was tied at 2-2. Cincinnati jumped into the lead 4:18 into the game, as Mark Voakes scored the first of his pair for the evening, re-directing a Jimmy Kilpatrick shot. Kilpatrick came up the left wing side and cut cross ice, firing a shot from the right side of goaltender Jordan Pearce. Then at 9:35 of the stanza, Kilpatrick had a near carbon copy of the earlier score-this time from Voakes and also Brett Robinson. Following a fight between Cincinnati's Hans Benson and former Cyclone Malcolm MacMillan that resulted in a Toledo power play, the Walleye got a power play score from Maxime Tanguay to cut the deficit in half. A shorthanded goal by Toledo's Adam Hobson at 13:38 tied the game at two going into the intermission. Each team had three power play chances in the period and Toledo had the only man-advantage score.

The Cyclones scores the first times in the second period and built a 4-2 lead. Scott Reynolds re-directed a Voakes shot from the left post at 5:26, as Kyle Hagel added the second assist. Less than two minutes later, Felix Petit slipped a puck under Pearce to extend the lead to 4-2. Matt Pierce added an assist on the score. The Walleye cut the deficit to 4-3, when Jonathan Trottier scored at 8:38.

On the ensuing faceoff, two seconds later, Benson was involved in his second altercation of the night-this time with six-foot-eight defenseman Milan Maslonka. As the two were getting settle into the penalty box, Hagel and Toledo's Trottier squared off at center ice. Less than two minutes after the third fight of the night, the Walleye netted the equalizing goal as Justin Hodgman picked up the score at 10:28. The Cyclones were able to grab the lead before the intermission when on the power play, Voakes re-directed a Doug Krantz shot from the point. Jason Woll had the other helper.

In the third period, the Cyclones scored both goals to close out the scoring. Kilpatrick netted his second lamplighter of the night at 1:29, stealing a cross ice pass in the Walleye zone. The scoring for the evening ended when Pierce scored 4:03 in the stanza.

Each team was one of five on the power play, while Cincinnati outshot Toledo, 33-30, on the night. Jeremy Smith turned aside 27 shots to claim the win, while Jordan Pearce took the loss, stopping 26 shots.

With the preseason now complete, the challenge is now Head Coach Chuck Weber's-as he must pair his current roster of 28 down by Wednesday's final opening night roster deadline. Weber could choose to keep up to 22 or 23 players by that time.

The Cyclones open the season at Elmira on Friday, October 16 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Wheeling on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm. There will be a special divisional championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.
