Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs closed out their preseason slate on Saturday night with a 3-2 loss to the Wheeling Nailers at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial.

After Johnstown won 2-1 in a shootout in Wheeling on Wednesday night the teams skated through a scoreless opening 10 minutes of the first period. Wheeling ended up on a 5-on-3 power play chance, and just as Ryan Del Monte exited the box Kevin Schmidt jammed a rebound past a sprawled Kris Mayotte at 10:02.

Neither team would score again until early in the third period. The Nailers were able to build their lead to two thanks to a quick strike by Cory Couturier. Jordan Fox set up Couturier in the Chiefs' zone just 57 seconds into the frame, and his wrist shot snuck past Mayotte. T.J. Fox converted on a shorthanded breakaway to stretch the Nailers' lead to three one minute and 49 seconds later.

Then it was Johnstown's turn to ratchet up the offense. Matt Robinson, skating in only his second game since a knee injury ended his season last November, fired a rebound past Jordan Parise at 15:38 of the third. Kyle Bushee and Del Monte assisted for their first points of the exhibition season. Jarrett Konkle was up next with a power play conversion at 18:54. With Wheeling shorthanded by two men, the Chiefs pulled Mayotte for the extra attacker and a three-skater advantage. Konkle got loose in the high slot, took a nice feed from Ryan Menei, and lifted a shot top shelf to get the Chiefs within one.

Mayotte made 26 saves in taking the defeat while the Chiefs launched 33 shots on net and ended the game 1-for-9 on the power play.
