Cyclones Bested by Blue Rocks, 6-4

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Brooklyn Cyclones fell to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 6-4, on Thursday night at Maimonides Park. The Cyclones held a 3-1 lead entering the ninth inning, but the Blue Rock bats remained persistent, putting a five spot in the ninth inning to pull off the comeback.

Despite the loss, CF Alex Ramírez set the all-time record for career hits by a Cyclones player. His sixth inning double marked his 163rd hit as a Cyclones, the highest tally by any player.

Brooklyn started the scoring right away in the bottom of the first. SS Jett Williams got the Brooklyn bats off and running. The 2022 first rounder laced a triple to the right field corner, and proceeded to score on a fielding error when the throw to third went out of play.

Brooklyn doubled its lead a few frames later in the third on a Wilmington wild pitch. LF Omar De Los Santos crossed home when RHP Andry Lara's delivery found its way to the backstop.

The Blue Rocks got the run back in the sixth - courtesy of 1B Branden Boissiere. That would be the only run surrendered by RHP Jawilme Ramirez, who tossed six innings while surrendering only three hits.

Brooklyn extended its lead to two in the sixth, when 1B William Lugo singled home Ramirez.

The Blue Rocks came surging back in the ninth. After back-to-back singles to open the frame, LHP Eli Ankeney struck out 2B Sammy Infante for the first out of the frame. With men on first and second, RF Jared McKenzie logged the third hit of the inning to load the bases.

From there, C Caleb Farmer delivered the big blow. The catcher lined a double to right, scoring three to give the Blue Rocks the lead.

After a walk and a flyout, CF Andrew Pinckney stepped in with two away on two on. The former Alabama Crimson Tide tripled to center, clearing the bases and pushing the lead to 6-3.

Brooklyn got one back in the ninth, courtesy of a sac fly from DH Jose Mena, but could muster no more. Brooklyn brought the tying run to the plate, but De Los Santos struck out looking to end the ballgame.

With Brooklyn's loss, their lead in the North Division standings is down to half a game over Jersey Shore. As of the time of this posting, The BlueClaws lead the Renegades 3-0 in the top of the fifth.

The Cyclones return to action Friday night at Maimonides Park, for the fourth contest of the six game set against the Blue Rocks. RHP Layonel Ovalles (0-1, 1.59) takes the ball for Brooklyn in his Maimonides Park debut, where he'll oppose RHP Brad Lord (1-5, 3.89). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
