New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - In front of the second sellout attendance (4,137) in team history, the New Haven County Cutters used a two-run seventh inning rally to defeat the Sussex Skyhawks, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon in game two of a three-game series at Historic Yale Field.
The record crowd consisted mainly of school children, from more than 30 local schools, who came to the game as part of School Day.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Cutters' right fielder Jeremy Pickrel tripled to lead off the frame and would come around to score on an error to tie the contest, 3-3.
Skyhawks' starter LHP Vince Davis (1-2) was then relieved by RHP Trey Stephens who allowed an RBI single to second baseman Matt Mercurio that put the Cutters on top for good, 4-3.
A throwing error by the Skyhawks in the bottom of the first kept the Cutters' inning alive and allowed shortstop Chas Terni to double home two runs.
All four Cutters' runs in the game were unearned.
Pickrel, Mercurio and Terni each tallied two hits in the ballgame. With his two singles, Terni's batting .462 (12-for-26) over his last eight games and has raised his season average 56 points to .333.
The Skyhawks cut their deficit to 2-1 in the second inning when third baseman Brian Rios doubled to start the frame and scored on right fielder B.J. Richmond's base hit.
Back-to-back to doubles, later followed by a RBI single from Brian Rios, had staked the Skyhawks to a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning.
Cutters' starter RHP Joslin Ramirez lasted 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits in a no decision.
RHP Tom Rispoli (1-1) threw two-thirds of an inning in relief for the Cutters and collected the win.
LHP Rolando Valles tossed a scoreless eighth inning and RHP Andy Weimer closed out the ninth to record the save (2) for the Cutters.
The win is the Cutters' third straight.
The Cutters look for the three-game series sweep of the Skyhawks Wednesday night beginning at 7:05 pm.
LHP Jeff Ferrell (0-2) will start for the Cutters with the Skyhawks sending RHP Ryan Dittfurth (0-2) to the mound.
