New Haven County Cutters News Release
(Bangor, MEâ June 20, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters matched their longest winning streak of the season on Sunday, topping the Bangor Lumberjacks 7-5 for their seventh consecutive win. The Lumberjacks have now dropped six straight while the series sweep is New Haven's fourth of the year (Elmira, Aces, New Jersey, and Bangor).
Lefthander Jordy Alexander (3-1) won his second straight game allowing five runs and seven hits in six innings while striking out six. Bangor starter Laine McKeller (0-1) takes the loss in his first professional start, tossing six innings allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits.
Tyrone Pendergass hit a double on the first pitch of the game for the Cutters to get things started. Gavin Fingleson's bunt was then misplayed by McKeller putting runners on the corners with nobody out for Jimmy Hurst. The New Haven DH then singled home Pendergass for the game's first run. First basemen Hector Lebron followed Hurst with a RBI single scoring Fingleson and giving the Cutters a 2-0 lead.
In the second, the Cutters put a third run on the board on a Jimmy Hurst sacrifice fly scoring Jose Mateo.
The Lumberjacks scored their first run of the game and series in the second inning on a Jose Garcia triple scoring Mark burke. Garcia then stole home on Jordy Alexander making it a 3-2 game.
With the lead cut to one in the third, New Haven catcher Adam Shorsher hit a 2-run blast giving the Cutters back their three run cushion at 5-2. The home run was Shorsher's second of the year.
After the Cutters added a run in the fourth to make it a 6-2 game, the Lumberjacks responded in the fifth with four consecutive singles putting two runs on the board and cutting the lead to 6-4.
Derry Hammond then hit a solo home run in the sixth off Alexander to bring Bangor back within one at 6-5, but that would be as close as the Lumberjacks would get.
New Haven did not register another hit after the third inning but were able to add an insurance run in the eighth. Bangor reliever T.J. Huguet walked four batters in the inning including a bases loaded walk to Jimmy Hurst that scored Shorsher and extended the New Haven lead to 7-5
Lefty reliever A.J. Brack pitched a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two batters for the Cutters. Right hander Chris Keelin worked around a double and a walk to toss a scoreless eighth. Closer Shane Waroff got Bangor shortstop Shin Uchino to ground into a 4-6-3 game ending double play to earn his fifth save of the year.
New Haven catcher went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jimmy hurst went 1-fo- 2 with two RBIs and two walks
