New Haven County Cutters News Release
(Elmira, NY- August 30, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters battled through a rain delay, muck, and an early deficit to come back and tie the Elmira Pioneers before falling in the end 8-6 in the finale of a four game series at Dunn Field.
The Cutters grabbed an early 1-0 in the first as after Luis Santiago led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice, Hector Lebron RBI single for the game's first run.
Elmira came back in a big way in the bottom of the second against Cutters' starter Ryan Bonesio. With two out and nobody on, the Pioneers strung together five hits and scored five runs on RBI singles by Ronnie Deck and Jobu Morita, a wild pitch scoring Deck, a Digz Edwards RBI double, and a RBI single off the bat of Jeremy Dodson.
Down 5-1, the Cutters drew closer with a run in the fourth and run in the fifth on a Billy Rich RBI single cutting the lead to 5-3.
Aaron Fera brought New Haven even closer in the sixth, leading off the inning with a long solo home run against Elmira starter Curt Borland, trimming the lead to 5-4. Later in the inning against reliever Saul Solveson, Jeff Brooks doubled to left center field, driving in Luis Santiago with the tying run. On the play, it appeared that Hector Lebron would score as well, but the Cutters' first basemen slipped around third and was stranded there when Adam Shorsher was retired to end the inning.
The game remained tied after seven as Aaron Fera gunned down Cleatus Davidson at the plate, trying to score on a Yuji Nerei double.
After Steve Checksfield reached base against Bonesio, the left hander was lifted for Luke Lambo. After the righty reliever retired the first batter he faced, Jason Bryan and Ronnie Deck hit back to back RBI doubles, giving the Pioneers a 7-5 lead. Elmira added a third run in the inning on a Digz Edwards RBI single scoring Ronnie Deck.
The Cutters scratched across one run against Matt Burch in the ninth on a Billy Rich RBI single to make it 8-6.
Elmira reliever Saul Solveson earned the win to improve to 3-6. New Haven starter Ryan Bonesio (4-7) went seven innings, allowing six runs on eleven hits and took the loss. Matt Burch picked up his fourth save.
