Bangor's Hammond and North Shore's Morse named NEL players of the week

Durham, N.C. -- Bangor's Derry Hammond and North Shore's Bryan Morse were selected by SportsTicker as the Northeast League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday, August 30 for the period of August 23-29. For Hammond, this is the third time this season he has been honored and eighth time a member of the Lumberjacks has been selected. On the other hand, Morse was chosen for the first time and is the seventh Spirit player to win the award.
Hammond, who also won on June 27 and July 18, hit .370 last week with four home runs and 17 runs batted in. Nine of those RBI came in Sunday's game against New Jersey when he had a two-run single, grand slam and three-run home run as the 'Jacks pounded the Jackals, 22-2. The nine-RBI effort broke the league record of seven set by several players, the last being Juan Espinal of Albany-Colonie on July 8, 2002. Hammond also scored 10 runs, hit four doubles and had a slugging percentage of .963 in six games for Bangor, which is tied with Quebec for first place in the North Division. He is in his seventh year of professional baseball and first year with the Lumberjacks.
Morse went 1-0 with a 0.53 earned run average in two starts. In 17 innings, he allowed one run, walked three and struck out 11 for the Spirit, which won the first half North Division Title. Against Quebec on August 29, Morse tossed a complete game, his league-leading sixth, six-hit shut out of Quebec to improve to 10-4 on the season. He ranks second in the NEL in ERA (2.56) and wins. Originally selected by the Florida Marlins in the 24th round of the 1999 MLB Draft, Morse pitched three seasons of Class A baseball before signing with Albany-Colonie in 2002. This is his second season with North Shore.
