June 17, 2008 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
HIGHLIGHTS: The Williamsport Crosscutters opened the 2008 season tonight in Mahoning Valley with a 4-3 loss to the Scrappers. An unearned run in the bottom of the ninth proved to be the difference.
RHP Freddy Ballestas drew the opening start for the Cutters. Ballestas went five innings allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out three.
Williamsport scored all their runs in the 5th inning. C Travis D'Arnaud singled to start the inning followed by a ground ball single to right by DH Bryan Frew. That set the stage for SS Troy Hanzawa's big hit for Williamsport, a 2-run double scoring both D'Arnaud and Frew. Hanzawa would later score the Cutters third run of the inning on an RBI single by CF Brandon Haislet.
With the score knotted at three apiece in the bottom of the ninth, the Scappers had runners at 1st and 2nd with two outs when OF Brock Simpson singled to center to plate the winning run of Cutters reliever B.J. Rosenberg.
Hanzawa finished the game 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's. D'Arnaud had 3 hits. The game was delayed by 41 minutes by rain in the top of the fifth inning.
The Cutters continue their series in Mahoning Valley tomorrow night at 7:05pm (ESPN 1050)
