Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Opening Day came and passed as the Renegades fell 13-7 to the Aberdeen IronBirds in the first game of the three-game series Tuesday night in front of 4,523 fans.
The Renegades gave right-hander Tyree Hayes, son of ex-major leaguer Charlie Hayes, the nod for Opening Day. Hayes struggled in his only inning on the mound allowing nine runs, three earned, in 2/3 of an inning.
The IronBirds took advantage of Hayes struggles on the mound tailing nine runs on five hits. After scoring five runs on three hits and batting throw the lineup Tom Baxter cleared the base path with a grandslam over the right-center field fence. Baxter's grandslam chased Hayes from the game and made way for knuckleballer Diego Echeverria.
The IronBirds added to their nine run lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs. With runners on first and second third baseman Jedidiah Stephen pulled an Echeverria offering down the leftfield line for a RBI double increasing the IronBirds lead to 10. Before the Renegades could chase the Birds from the field they added another run scoring Robbie Widlansky from third on a ground out to the second baseman.
The Renegades scored their first run on their first double of the 2008 season in the bottom of the third cutting the Birds lead to 10 runs. Designated hitter Jason Tweedy doubled into left field scoring a run from first base.
After the Renegades plated their first run of 2008 the IronBirds bounced right back plating two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. The Renegades refused to say uncle being down 13-1 with 3 ½ innings left to play.
The Renegades rally started in the bottom of the fifth after what looked to be at taylor-made double play was booted by Aberdeen's second baseman Tom Edwards. With the bases juiced Mike McKenna hit a ground ball towards the second baseman who let the ball roll between his legs allowing two Renegades to score. The âGades took advantage of the IronBirds error and plated two more runs on a bases clearing double to left field courtesy of Robi Estrada.
After the fifth inning the Renegades pitches held the IronBirds scoreless and while the Renegades offense added a run in the sixth and seventh inning it was not enough.
Gades relievers Robert Della Grotta (3.0 IP) and Travis Risser (1.0 IP) closed out the game combining to throw four innings of hitless baseball.
Hayes (0-1) was tagged with the loss as Cole McCurry (1-0) recorded the win as the Renegades loss the 2008 Opener 13-7.
Tomorrow the Renegades take on the IronBirds of Aberdeen for game two of the three-game series with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Frank De Los Santos(0-0, 0.00) is getting the nod for Hudson Valley and he will be facing off against southpaw Chris Salberg (0-0, 0.00).
