June 17, 2008 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release
The Spikes began their 2008 season in dramatic fashion Tuesday night, falling just short of the win against Jamestown Jammers (1-0) in the bottom of the ninth inning 7-6 at Russell E. Diethrick, Jr. Park.
The Spikes refused to stay down after Miguel Fermin scored a run on a fielders choice in the bottom of the second inning, the only run Emilis Guerrero would give up in his four innings pitched. Guerrero, who has taken the mound for both Hickory (A) and Altoona (AA) had four called strike outs, and gave up only three hits in his first outing with the Spikes.
The Spikes answered back in the fourth inning when Calvin Anderson blasted a two-run home run, scoring Matt Hague who singled to lead off the inning. The Spikes held onto the lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when Ben Lasater hit a two-out grand slam off Spikes' pitcher Allen Ponder.
The score was soon tied after Calvin Anderson, Quincy Latimore and Mark Carver all scored, after singling with two outs. The Spikes carried the tied game into the bottom of the ninth, and with two outs, Ernie Banks singled to left field, earning the win for the Jammers.
Yoffri Martinez gave up only one hit and no runs in two innings of work, while striking out three.
Anderson led the Spikes offense, going 3-for-5 in his professional debut, scoring twice and earning two RBI. Latimore added an additional two runs with two hits. The pair scored four of the Spikes' six runs.
Right-hander Gary Amato (0-1) will be charged with the loss, after pitching two innings of late relief. He surrendered only one run of two hits, while striking out two.
The Spikes will try for their first win of the season tomorrow against the Jamestown Jammers, with first pitch set for 10:45 a.m. Righty Rudy Owens will take the mound for the Spikes. Fans can catch all the action on 3WZ, WZWW 95.3 FM beginning at 10:30 a.m.
