New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - The New Haven County Cutters (28-18, 53-38) closed out the 2006 regular season, Monday afternoon, with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory to sweep a four-game series from the Nashua Pride (23-23, 40-48) at Historic Yale Field.
Trailing 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Cutters' third baseman Jeremy Terni hit a hard grounder between shortstop and third base that was fielded but thrown away which allowed first baseman Chris Gaskin and centerfielder Doug Vroman to score and give the Cutters a 4-3 lead.
The Pride threatened in the ninth when catcher Mark Hamilton led off with a bloop double which was followed by an error that put runners on the corners with nobody out. A groundout and an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out before Cutters' reliever Andy Weimer came on and struck out the next two batters looking to finish off the Pride and grab the save (20).
The Pride took their 3-2 lead in the sixth inning when Hamilton lined a three-run home run into the short porch right field picnic area.
For the second straight day, Cutters' second baseman Jose Delgado led off the bottom of the first inning with a long home run to right field (2).
The Cutters made it 2-0 in the fourth inning when designated hitter D.J. Boston doubled to begin the frame and came around to score on two passed balls.
RHP Tim Keinath started for the Cutters and was effective in his 6.0 innings of work, allowing three runs on seven hits in a no decision.
RHP Jarrett Stawarz (6-5) tossed 2.0 innings of hitless and scoreless relief for the Cutters to earn the win.
Pride reliever Lenny Carter (0-3) was responsible for the Cutters tying and go-ahead runs and suffered the loss.
The Cutters, winners of five straight and eight of nine, will take Tuesday off before opening the first round of the playoffs Wednesday against the Brockton Rox at Historic Yale Field. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
