Altoona Curve News Release
AKRON, Ohio - For the second time in the first three games of the new season, the Altoona Curve shut out the Akron RubberDucks, 2-0, on Saturday at Canal Park in Akron.
Cam Vieaux guided the scoreless effort through 4.2 innings and departed after using 90 pitches against 16 hitters. He gave way to Beau Sulser (Win, 1-0) in his Double-A debut while Angel German and Matt Eckelman (Save, 1) pitched scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth respectively.
The Curve scored first for third straight game when Bligh Madris, Jerrick Suiter and Logan Hill combined on three consecutive two-out singles in the opening inning to put Altoona ahead, 1-0.
In the fifth, Robbie Glendinning connected on a two-out, RBI single to swell the lead to 2-0. Mitchell Tolman worked a lead-off walk, tagged up on a flyout to reach second, and went to third on a groundout before scoring on Glendinning's first Double-A RBI.
Akron starter Sean Brady (Loss, 0-1) navigated through seven innings and allowed both runs on four hits while the 'Ducks offense was silenced to four hits in defeat.
Sulser, added to the Curve roster before the game, made his Double-A debut when he took over for Vieaux in the fifth. He retired his first four hitters before walking a pair in the seventh to give Akron their only baserunner in scoring position on the afternoon.
The Curve are out to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2012 and have an opportunity to sweep the 'Ducks in the season finale.
The series between the Curve and RubberDucks concludes on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at Canal Park. Right-hander Scooter Hightower (0-0, 0.00) will make his first start of the season for Altoona while Akron gives the starting nod to righty Zach Plesac.
The Curve return to Peoples Natural Gas Field for their home opener and begin a seven-game homestand on Thursday, April 11 against the Akron RubberDucks. Promotional highlights for Opening Week at PNG Field include a special appearance by Pirates broadcaster Steve Blass, Opening Night Fireworks, the first Allegheny Yinzers game and much more.
