Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(Portland, ME) - In two of the first three games to start the season, the Fightin Phils have overwhelmed the Sea Dogs to continue their recent run of success at Hadlock Field. For the third straight day, manager Shawn Williams sent a newcomer to the mound for his Double-A debut. And the third one was quite a charm, with David Parkinson delivering a five-inning gem with 10 strikeouts to finish one off his career high. The offense did its part in spades, with all nine Fightins chipping in on the way to 15 hits and a resounding 8-1 victory for Reading's first 3-0 start since 2012.

For the third straight game, the R-Phils opened the scoring, getting to former first round pick Tanner Houck in the top of the second inning. In his first at-bat with the Phillies organization, veteran infielder Ali Castillo doubled hard down the left field line. With one out, Josh Stephen smacked a single into right field that got by Aneury Tavarez for the game's first run. Jose Antequera reached on an infield single, and back-to-back two out singles from Mickey Moniak and Henri Lartigue pushed the lead to 3-0.

Portland's only resistance came in the bottom of the third when C.J. Chatham continued his strong weekend with a sacrifice fly after Tavarez hit a one out double and moved to third on a wild pitch. The Fightins response in the fourth put the game out of reach once they sent all nine to the plate.

Five straight two out hits started with Moniak and extended through Castillo, with the middle part of the line consisting of Lartigue, Darick Hall, and Cornelius Randolph. That group, minus Hall, brought in a run, and Houck's (0-1) day was done after he surrendered a career-high seven earned runs on 11 hits.

Parkinson (1-0) pitched five like Adonis Medina and Ramon Rosso before him, finishing with 10 punchouts while allowing just the one run on one hit. Jakob Hernandez piggy-backed off that with two perfect innings of relief that featured a pair of strikeouts in both the sixth and seventh to shine in his Double-A introduction.

The last Fightins run came across in the seventh when they loaded the bases with two outs against Zach Schellenger in his second appearance of the series. Moniak drew a third walk in the inning to bring in his third run of the ballgame, giving him an Eastern League-leading six RBIs in just three games. Antequera's ninth inning single off Adam Lau put him on base for the fifth time in as many plate appearances, and gave him just the second 4-hit game of his career. JD Hammer finished off the last two innings in relief, earning his second strikeout when he whiffed former Phillies product Josh Tobias to end the ballgame.
