Altoona Curve News Release

(ALTOONA, PA)-- In the wake of Hurricanes Frances and Charley, the Altoona Curve is teaming up with the American Red Cross to raise money for the Disaster Relief Fund during the Curve's 2004 playoffs.

To help raise funds for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, fans attending any Curve home playoff game at Blair County Ballpark are encouraged to pledge donations for every Curve run scored throughout the playoffs. Larger pledges for each Curve playoff win will also be accepted, as well as any other monetary donations. In addition, a silent auction featuring several team jerseys will take place during the second playoff game, with all proceeds benefiting the Disaster Relief Fund. The Curve and American Red Cross have set a fundraising goal of $20,000 for the "Cheer for the Curve to Help Red Cross" playoff campaign.

"The Curve family is happy to support the efforts of the American Red Cross as they help the many families in need of disaster relief today and every day," said Curve General Manager Todd Parnell.

Pledges and donations will be accepted at the Roaring Spring Water Customer Service Booth during all Curve playoff games, in the main office during regular office hours, by calling (814) 943-5400 or by calling the Red Cross Chapter at (814) 944-6146, ext. 209. Checks should be made payable to the American Red Cross and have "ARC National Disaster Fund" written in the memo portion.

The Curve will open the 2004 Eastern League Playoffs at Blair County Ballpark Wednesday and Thursday in Games 1 and 2 of the Southern Division First Round Playoff Series. Altoona could host as many as five (5) post-season games between the first round and Eastern League Championship Series between September 8th and 15th.

The Disaster Relief Fund enables the Red Cross to be at the side of disaster victims with free and immediate assistance, providing shelter, food, counseling and other essentials to those in need. Financial donations to the Red Cross are the best way to assist victims of disaster. Monetary contributions enable the Red Cross to purchase the most urgently needed items as close to the disaster site as possible. Purchasing near the disaster site ensures supplies get to victims as quickly as possible, without delays and hefty transportation costs. Because communities hit by disasters generally experience significant economic loss, buying goods locally also helps to stimulate the weakened economy by pumping money back into area businesses.
