
Fisher Cats take playoff opener 2-0 at Gill Stadium Wednesday night

Manchester- Right fielder Maikel Jova's homer in the bottom of the 7th inning broke a scoreless tie and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats went on to a 2-0 victory in the opening game of the Eastern League's Northern Division playoff series over the Binghamton Mets.
Jova's homer into the left field bullpen came off reliever Tim Lavigne (0-1) to lead off the seventh inning. Paul Chiaffredo singled, Mike Snyder singled, and Dominic Rich doubled in Chiaffredo for the other Fisher Cat run, also in the seventh. Lavigne came on in relief when Met starter Yusmeiro Petit left in the fifth with a blister. Petit allowed 1 hit in 4.1 innings, striking out nine Fisher Cats.
New Hampshire left hander Gustavo Chacin (1-0) allowed 1 hit, walked three and struck out a season-high 13 in seven innings. Jamie Vermilyea struck out two batters in a scoreless eighth. Jordan DeJong pitched a perfect ninth while striking out two to earn the save. The trio combined to allow Binghamton just 1 hit while striking out a season high 17.
The Fisher Cats now lead the best-of-five series 1-game-to-none. The teams will play again at 6:05pm Thursday night with right-hander Brandon League (6-4, 3.32) on the mound for New Hampshire against righty Jason Scobie (5-5, 2.82).
All weeknight playoff games at Gill Stadium begin at 6:05pm and on weekends at 5:05pm. Every playoff game will be heard on 107.7 WTPL-FM in Concord and Manchester.
