State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA -- Matt Curry delivered his fifth home run of the season to tie the game in the fifth inning, but the State College Spikes dropped a tight contest to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 2-1, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Saturday night.

Curry's homer over the right-field wall was his second hit of the game, after his second-inning single started the Spikes' offense for the evening. State College (29-31) had two more opportunities to tie or take the lead late in the game, but left runners in scoring position to end both the eighth and ninth innings.

Zac Fuesser kept the Spikes within striking distance for the first four innings, striking out seven and allowing just one run on five hits. The seven strikeouts mark a season high for any State College pitcher in a single game this season.

Mahoning Valley (26-35) took the first lead of the game after Carlos Moncrief led off the game with a double and scored on Nick Bartolone's single. Following Curry's homer, Chase Burnette doubled and scored on Trent Baker's single in the sixth to enable the Scrappers to retake the lead for good.

Spikes reliever Mitch Fienemann (3-3) took the loss after allowing Mahoning Valley's eventual game-winning run on a total of two hits over two innings. Brandon Cumpton, the ninth-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010, made his Spikes debut against the Scrappers and struck out one in two perfect innings of work.

Jordan Cooper (5-3) started for Mahoning Valley and recorded his fourth straight win. Cooper yielded one run on a total of three hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings of work. Clayton Ehlert (7) allowed just one hit and one walk over 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the save.

State College will look to even up the three-game series against Mahoning Valley in game two on Sunday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 6:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Tyler Waldron (3-5) starting for the Spikes against left-hander Cole Cook (0-0) for the Scrappers. Waldron threw five no-hit innings against Aberdeen in his last outing this past Saturday.
