Troy, NY - With the bases loaded in the bottom half of the ninth inning, Aberdeen IronBirds reliever Jose Barajas threw a wild pitch, allowing the winning run to score. The Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the IronBirds Saturday night 4-3.
The IronBirds took the lead in the first inning. With two men out, Kipp Schutz laced a single to left field. Austin Rauch walked. Tyler Stampone then grounded a double down the third base line, knocking in Schutz, and making it 1-0.
Jeremy Nowak doubled the IronBirds lead with one swing of the bat in the fourth. Nowak (1) blasted an opposite field home run to left, giving Aberdeen a 2-0 lead.
The ValleyCats tied it up in the sixth. With one on and nobody out, Kike Hernandez blasted a two-run homer to left.
IronBirds starting pitcher Tim Adleman exited the ball game after the sixth. He surrendered two runs on three hits. Adleman walked one and struck out two.
The IronBirds took the lead again in the seventh. After loading the bases, Austin Rauch worked a walk to knock in a run and make it 3-2.
Tri-City tied it back up, though, in their half of the seventh. Marcus Nidiffer led off the inning with a triple off of Aberdeen reliever Jason Gurka. A walk to Adam Bailey put two on with one out for Austin Wates. He hit a ground ball to short. The IronBirds tried to turn two, but Wates beat out the relay to first. A run scored, tying the game at three.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth. The ValleyCats loaded the bases against Barajas. With Ben Orloff at the plate, Barajas threw a pitch in the dirt that got by Aberdeen catcher Dashenko Ricardo, allowing the winning run to score from third.
Michael Ness (2-1) got the win. He pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Barajas (0-1) took the loss.
