Curry beats buzzer, Energy win 109-107

DES MOINES, Iowa - JamesOn Curry hit a fade away jumper as time expired as the Iowa Energy defeated the Fort Wayne Mad Ants 109-107 at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night. The Central Division leading Energy's record moves to 26-18.

Early in the game, it appeared Ft. Wayne would run away from the Energy as they jumped out to a 42-21 lead early in the 2nd quarter. Iowa responded with a 22-4 run keyed by Demetris Nichols, who had 14 of his game high 33 in the quarter. The game went back and forth throughout the 2nd half setting up a dramatic finish in front of the season high 7,091 fans.

Iowa was down by four with 1:03 remaining in the game when Nichols drained a 3-pointer to bring the Energy within one. The teams traded missed shots before Curtis Stinson and Walker Russell Jr. were forced to jump ball due to a tie up. Stinson won the jump and the Energy called timeout with :10 left. With the clock winding down, Nichols drove the lane and found newcomer John Edwards who dunked the ball and was fouled, setting the crowd into a frenzy. Edwards made the free throw to put Iowa up two. After a Ft. Wayne timeout, Taj McCullough drove the lane and tied the score with 1.9 seconds remaining.

With no timeouts left, Iowa's Othyus Jeffers was forced to quickly heave the ball down court towards JamesOn Curry. The ball appeared to be tipped by Ft. Wayne, but fell into Curry's hands. The former Chicago Bull launched the ball towards the rim just as the buzzer sounded, hitting nothing but net.

After discussing the shot, the referees counted the basket to give Iowa the crucial Central Division win.

Curtis Stinson added 24 points for the Energy, who out rebounded Ft. Wayne 44 to 33 on the night.

Taj McCullough scored 35 points for the Mad Ants, who fall to 17-28 on the season.
