Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons walked-off with a 2-1 win against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Saturday in front of a boisterous crowd of 7,690 at Regions Field.
The two squads traded zeroes over the first five frames with Nick McCully allowing just one walk over his first 5.0 IP. However, the Blue Wahoos would break through in the sixth, getting their first hit on a flared single over the head of second baseman Micah Johnson by Brodie Greene. Greene would steal secondbase and score on a base hit by Ray Navarro, giving Pensacola a 1-0 lead.
The Barons responded quickly, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the inning and tying the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Farrell.
McCully would exit with a no-decision after allowing a run on three hits over 7.0 IP as the Barons and Blue Wahoos stayed deadlocked until the ninth inning.
Inthe final frame, Jamie Pedroza reached on a one-out single, advanced to second on a pickoff error by pitcher Fabian Williamson (0-3, 5.65) and scurried tothird on a wild pitch. After a strikeout by Micah Johnson, Williamson intentionally walked Jeff Keppinger and unintentionally walked Trayce Thompson to load the bases for Chris Curley. Curley worked the count in his favor to 3-0 before Williamson battled back with two consecutive strikes. On the 7th pitch of the at-bat, Curley lined a base hit up the middle, scoring Pedroza and setting off a mob scene at behind first base.
The Barons out-hit the Blue Wahoos 12-3 on the night but left 12 on-base, repeatedly squandering scoring opportunities throughout the game. OF Michael Earley led the team with three hits, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored. Keppinger and Pedroza chipped in with two hits apiece.
With the win, the Barons improved to 14-21 on the season while Pensacola fell to 16-20. The Barons will look to win their third-straight on Sunday afternoon when they send RHP Chris Beck (2-5, 4.93) to the hill against RHP Robert Stephenson (2-3, 4.41). First pitch is scheduled for a 3:00 PM CDT.
