Cumana Catch Saves Win for Threshers

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers got a game-saving catch from their left fielder in a thrilling 4-3 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Friday at Spectrum Field.
Grenny Cumana robbed Luis Carpio of a game-tying hit when he made a sprawling catch in left-center field for the final out of the ballgame. Quinn Brodey, who was pinch running at first base, was rounding third as Cumana was pushing himself back up.
Threshers closer Addison Russ improved to 9 for 9 in save chances for Clearwater with the scoreless ninth. He is now 22 out of 22 across two levels this year thanks to Cumana's catch.
The way the Threshers took their 4-3 lead was also a stunner. The Mets were up 3-2 with two outs in the sixth inning when Kyle Martin slugged a 3-0 pitch from Blake Taylor over the right field wall for the go-ahead two-run homer.
The Threshers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Luke Williams hit two-out RBI singles in the first and third innings.
Ali Sanchez launched a two-run home run for the Mets in the fourth inning to tie the game 2-2.
The Mets took a brief lead in the top of the sixth. Mike Paez led off with a walk and advanced from first to third base on a throwing error by shortstop Arquimedes Gamboa. A passed ball on catcher Henri Lartigue allowed Paez to scamper home and put the Mets up 3-2.
Taylor was charged for four runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. Mets relievers Austin McGeorge and Thomas McIlraith combined to go the final 2.1 scoreless.
Clearwater starter David Parkinson received a no decision. He gave up two runs on four hits over five innings. He entered the contest with a 1.51 ERA in 17 starts between Low-A Lakewood and Clearwater this season.
Dan Rizzie and Paez each went 2 for 3 with a walk.
For the Threshers, Williams went 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run. Mickey Moniak also went 3 for 4.
The Mets (19-27, 46-67) and Threshers (30-17, 62-53) play the third game of their series on Saturday. First pitch from Spectrum Field is 6:15 p.m.
