Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, FL - Former MLB star Rick Ankiel will throw out the first pitch prior to Tuesday's Palm Beach Cardinals vs. Tampa Tarpons game. The Port St. Lucie High School product was a second round draft pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1997 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with St. Louis in 1999 and played 10 seasons with the organization.

Aside from his 11 year MLB career, Ankiel is the co-author of New York Times Bestseller "The Phenomenon," a book about his "mysterious" anxiety condition known as "the Yips" that affected his once-in-a-generation ability to pitch. After playing primarily as a pitcher in the MLB during the 1999-2004 seasons, Ankiel returned to the Major League ranks in 2007 as an outfielder for the final seven years of his career.

The southpaw was second in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2000 when he finished 11-7 with a 3.50 ERA and 194 strikeouts in 175.0 IP.

First pitch is set for 6:30 PM with Ankiel throwing his ceremonial first pitch at approximately 6:10 PM.
