Iowa Cubs News Release

Metairie, La. (April 16, 2015) - A seven-run sixth inning, keyed by a Kris Bryant three-run home run, helped the Iowa Cubs (4-3) drop the New Orleans Zephyrs (2-5) 10-7 in game one of Thursday's doubleheader at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La.

Gonzalez Germen (2-0) grabbed the win for Iowa with 1.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Eric Jokisch.

Jokisch allowed four earned runs on four hits in 3.2 innings before being pulled after tossing 34 pitches in the fourth inning. Left-hander Joe Ortiz tossed a scoreless sixth inning. Right-hander Armando Rivero ran into trouble in the seventh, allowing three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings. Lefty James Russell came in to record the final out for his first save of the year.

Bryant led Iowa with the homer, his third of the year, and three RBI. Bryant could have had two home runs, had Zephyrs right-fielder Cole Gillespie not robbed him with leaping catch against the wall in the fifth inning. Addison Russell had three hits, a double and three RBI. Rubi Silva had an RBI and two hits.

Right-hander Jake Esch allowed two earned runs on four hits in his Triple-A debut. Left-hander Pat Urckfitz (0-1) suffered the loss for New Orleans after allowing six runs in 0.2 innings, including the Bryant homer in the sixth inning.

Game two of tonight's doubleheader is scheduled to begin approximately 30 minutes following the finish of game one, pending rain the Metairie area. Right-hander Carlos Pimentel (0-1, 12.27) is scheduled to take the mound in game two for the I-Cubs against Z's left-hander Adam Conley (0-1, 6.00).

The Cubs travel home to Des Moines for Friday's home opener at Principal Park as they begin a four-game series with the Oklahoma City Dodgers, new Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:08 p.m. CT. Right-hander Barret Loux (0-0, 4.91) is set to start for the I-Cubs opposite Dodgers right-hander Mike Bolsinger (1-0, 0.00).
