Iowa Cubs News Release

The Iowa Cubs swept the Round Rock Express, 2-1 and 4-0, in a double-header this evening at Principal Park. The Cubs prevailed in game one, 2-1, behind Casey Coleman's dazzling pitching performance and Jeff Samardzija followed it up with another stellar performance in game two. In the seven inning game, Coleman went the distance, giving up only two hits, one run, no walks, while striking out eight. Coleman retired the last 21 batters he faced, not allowing a man to reach base after the second batter of the game. Coleman pushed his record to 6-5 on the season.

Round Rock got on the board in the top of the first inning. Brian Bogusevic singled to lead off the game, followed by a single by Oswaldo Navarro, advancing Bogusevic to third. With one out, Chris Johnson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Bogusevic, and giving the Express a 1-0 lead. Bogusevic and Navarro were the only two Express batters to reach base the entire game. The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the second as Bobby Scales blasted a home run to right field. It was his second home run of the season and it tied the score at one.

The Cubs were able to take the lead in the bottom of the third. Darwin Barney led off the inning with a single. After back-to-back strikeouts, Scales drew a walk, and Bryan LaHair singled in Barney, giving the Cubs the 2-1 lead, and that's the way it would stay.

Josh Banks (7-5, 3.03) started and took the loss for the Express. Banks tossed five innings, surrendering seven hits, two runs, four walks, while striking out two.

In game two Iowa took an early 2-0 lead. Barney doubled to right and scored on Micah Hoffpauir's single. Brad Snyder, who walked to reach base, scored the second run of the inning.

Iowa tallied another pair of runs in the fifth inning when Hoffpauir hit a two-run homer to right field, scoring Snyder. Jeff Samardzija (5-0, 1.80) threw five scoreless innings to pick up his fifth win of the season.

The Cubs and Express meet again tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Principal Park.
