NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds won the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds, 8-3, splitting Tuesday's twinbill at historic Greer Stadium against the PCL Northern Division leader.
Ruben Gotay led off the top of the third inning with a single to center field and advanced to third base on two infield groundouts. Jon Jay then hit a grounder to second. Sounds second baseman Johnny Raburn dove to prevent the ball from leaving the outfield, but couldn't throw in time to first to record the final out as Jay scored the first run.
Nashville scored the next four runs in the next frame to take a 4-1 lead. Starting pitcher Marty McLeary singled to help his own cause, and then advanced to second on a throwing error by Memphis right fielder Joe Mather. Adam Stern singled to move the pitcher to third base, followed by a Trent Oeltjen RBI base knock to tie the game at 1-1.
With the bases loaded later in the inning, Luis Cruz took the Sounds team-lead in RBIs, singling home Katin and Gamel. On the next play, the Sounds went up 4-1 on a Raburn infield groundout.
The Redbirds got two back in the next inning to cut the Sounds lead to 4-3. Allen Craig hit his fourth homer of the year for the first run of the frame. After Joe Mather doubled, Mark Shorey singled him home from second base for the other run.
Stern tripled during the next inning for the Sounds and scored on a double from Oelten, his second RBI of the contest that made it 5-3.
The Sounds scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mat Gamel singled home Stern for the first run, followed by a two-run double down the third base line by Brendan Katin for the other two runs for the 8-3 Nashville advantage.
After being released by the Blue Jays organization and signed by the Brewers yesterday, right-handed starter McLeary (1-5) picked up his first win of the season in his Sounds debut. The 35-year old allowed three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk over 5 1/3 innings thrown
A.J. Murray pitched 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, as Brandon Kintzler threw a shutout seventh.
Gotay smacked an opposite-field solo homer in the top of the ninth inning to give the Redbirds to a 2-1 victory over the Sounds in Tuesday's twinbill opener.
Gotay's blast to left-center, which came off Sounds reliever Jeff Bennett, was the veteran infielder's seventh roundtripper of the year and sent Nashville (33-31) to its fifth straight defeat.
Josh Kinney retired the Sounds in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory and record his second save in two nights for the Redbirds.
Memphis reliever Matt Scherer (3-1) was the beneficiary of Gotay's blast, picking up the win after working one scoreless frame.
Nashville grabbed a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a two-out throwing error by Redbirds shortstop Tyler Greene.
Adam Stern led off the Sounds' fifth with a single against Memphis starter Brandon Dickson and moved to second on a Ray Olmedo sacrifice. After an intentional walk to Trent Oeltjen put runners on first and second, Katin hit a routine grounder to short. Greene misfired to second on the play to allow Stern to hustle home with the night's first run.
Memphis rallied to tie the contest a half-inning later when Greene doubled with two outs and scored when Allen Craig followed with an RBI single to left off Sounds starter Chuck Löfgren.
Löfgren turned in his first quality start in over a month for the Sounds, allowing one run on four hits while striking out a season-high six batters over six innings, but took a no-decision for his efforts.
Brian Bruney made his Brewers organization debut with two scoreless innings for Nashville.
Bennett (0-1) took the loss for the Sounds after surrendering the go-ahead homer in his lone frame of action.
The Sounds had a pair of runners gunned down at the plate during the contest. To end the fourth frame, Redbirds centerfielder Jim Rapoport made a strong throw home to nail Mat Gamel as he attempted to score from second on Löfgren's single up the middle. In the sixth, skipper Don Money green-lighted Luis Cruz around third on pinch-hitter Erick Almonte's infield single to short, and the infielder was easily thrown out at the plate by 60 feet by Greene to squelch a scoring opportunity.
The Sounds and Redbirds are scheduled to play at 7:05 pm CT on Wednesday evening at historic Greer Stadium in the fourth game of a six-game series. Left-hander Chase Wright (4-3, .26) takes the mound for Nashville against Redbirds left-hander Evan MacLane (4-4, 4.13).
