Daytona Tortugas News Release
CLEARWATER, FL - The Daytona Cubs (73-62, 39-26) swept a doubleheader Wednesday night to the Clearwater Threshers (66-69, 29-36) with a 2-0 win in game one. The D-Cubs would go on to win game two 5-2 after a facing a 2-1 deficit late in the ballgame.
The Cubs and Threshers found themselves in another pitcher's duel in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader. Both offenses scuffled through five innings between D-Cubs Alberto Cabrera and Edgar Garcia of the Threshers.
The D-Cubs broke open the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning with a leadoff double by Evan Crawford. Junior Lake followed with a solid single to right to move Crawford to third base. D.J. LeMahieu added his 70th RBI on a fielder's choice to score Crawford. Ryan Flaherty added an extra insurance run with a sacrifice fly to deep center field giving Daytona a 2-0 lead.
Alberto Cabrera (7-5) went the distance for Daytona picking up the teams first complete-game shutout of the season to go with six strikeouts to pick up the victory. The tough luck loss went to Edgar Garcia (3-4).
Daytona scored a run in the first inning in game two off of Threshers starter Jon Velasquez. Shortstop Junior Lake led off the game with an infield single that ricocheted off the glove of Velasquez. Lake then stole second base and came home on a single to center field off the bat of designated hitter Rebel Ridling. The hit for Ridling snapped a 0-25 skid.
Clearwater took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third inning with four hits off of starter Dae-Eun Rhee. Catcher Bob Stumpo and shortstop Troy Hanzawa led off the frame with back-to-back singles. A double play off the bat of Derrick Mitchell put two outs on the board and a runner at third for Fidel Hernandez. The Threshers second baseman lined a single into left field to tie the game at one as Stumpo scored. Designated hitter Steve Susdorf then lined a double over the head of left fielder Smaily Borges to plate Hernandez from first.
Daytona got back in front thanks to a big miscue from Threshers reliever Jacob Diekman in the top of the fifth inning. Catcher Michael Brenly and first baseman Jake Opitz got aboard to start the inning on a hit by pitch and walk, respectively. A ground out put them both in scoring position, but Jose Valdez could not bring them in as he grounded out to first. Junior Lake then bounced one back to Diekman who fielded it cleanly, but threw it over the head of first baseman Darin Ruf. Brenly and Opitz each scored to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead.
The D-Cubs would take advantage of even more sloppy defense from Diekman in the top of the sixth inning by plating two more insurance runs. Kyler Burke reached on an infield single to lead off the inning followed by a triple from Jake Opitz plating Burke. Opitz would eventually come across to score on a wild pitch from Diekman to extend the D-Cubs lead to 5-2.
Chris Siegfried (3-7) picked up the win in relief for Daytona with Jacob Diekman (0-2) taking the loss for Clearwater.
