Miracle Squeak out 1-0 Shutout Win

FORT MYERS, FL (September 1st, 2010) - With two outs and a man at second in the eighth inning, Miracle center-fielder Jhonathan Goncalves singled up the middle to bring home Allan De San Miguel - breaking a scoreless game in the eighth as Fort Myers went on to beat the Cardinals 1-0. They have now won six straight over Palm Beach, and move within two games of first place in the FSL South with four games to play. Bradenton has lost three straight in St. Lucie, after holding a 4.5 game lead in the standings entering yesterday's action.

In the decisive eighth, Nate Hanson led off with a single against Cardinals reliever Cory Rauschenberger. Chris Herrmann advanced him to second, before a wild pitch brought Hanson to third. Allan De San Miguel then grounded to short, with Hanson being caught in a rundown trying to score the go-ahead run. But De San Miguel was able to advance to second in the next at-bat, on a passed-ball charged to the catcher Roberto Espinoza. Goncalves then delivered the winning hit with a sharp line-drive up the middle, that grazed second-baseman Domnit Bolivar's glove en route to center-field. Rauschenberger (1-1)was charged with the loss, giving up the unearned run in the inning.

Jhon Garcia allowed a one-out single in the ninth, but completed the shutout for the Miracle pitching staff that only allowed five hits. They've allowed just seven hits in the series thus far, and have only given up five runs to the Cardinals in their last five games. Garcia picked up his second save of the year.

Brett Carroll (1-0) picked up the win, tossing three shutout frames in relief of Liam Hendriks. Carroll, in just his second appearance with the Miracle after a promotion from the rookie-level GCL Twins, allowed only two singles. Hendriks did not allowed a hit until there were two-outs in the fourth, yielding back-to-back singles.

The loss spoiled a strong start for Palm Beach starter Deryk Hooker, who pitched seven shutout innings. He allowed only three singles, and struck out nine.

Fort Myers (33-31) will play for the final time at Hammond Stadium tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. They will then head to St. Lucie for a critical season-ending series with the Mets.
