St. Lucie Mets News Release
Prior to their regularly scheduled nine-inning contest, the St. Lucie Mets and Bradenton Marauders had to complete their suspended game from Tuesday night which was suspended due to unplayable field conditions.
The Mets jumped out in front early. Pedro Zapata and Michael Fisher led the first inning off with back-to-back singles. A misplayed ball by the Marauders center fielder would plate Zapata with the first run of the game and Fisher would come around to score on an RBI fielder's choice by Rafael Fernandez giving the Mets an early 2-0 lead. Mets starter Scott Shaw was nearly perfect through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth allowing his only run to cut the Mets lead to 2-1. The Mets got the run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Richard Lucas making it a 3-1 game. Pedro Martinez relieved Shaw in the fifth inning and was not greeted kindly by the Marauders offense. Martinez walked the first batter he faced then hit the next. The Marauders loaded the bases with one out but managed only a sacrifice fly as Martinez was able to work himself out of the jam with the Mets still leading 3-2. The Marauders knotted the score 3-3 on a two-out RBI single off of Michael Powers in the top of the sixth inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning the rains came suspending play for the evening. After resuming play, the Mets and Marauders were retired in order in the seventh inning forcing extra innings. St. Lucie pitcher Michael Powers got out of a jam in the top of the eighth inning after stranding a runner on first and third setting the stage for another walk-off win by the Mets. Pedro Zapata led the inning off with a single and was sacrificed over by Michael Fisher. Stefan Welch was intentionally walked and both runners advance on a wild pitch. With two outs Rafael Fernandez singled to short center field driving in Zapata with the winning run.
Michael Powers got the win tossing three innings allowing only one run. Zapata led the Mets offensively with three hits and two runs scored and Fernandez had two hits with two RBI in the 4-3 victory.
After their second consecutive extra-inning walk-off win, the Mets fell behind early in game two of the evening. Mets starter Scott Moviel walked the first batter and had runners on second and third with two outs and almost got out of the jam but a fielding miscue between first and second base cost the Mets the run putting them in an early 1-0 hole. The Marauders got another run in the second to make it a 2-0 game before the Mets could strike back. St. Lucie cut it to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Stefan Welch singled home Rafael Fernandez. Wilmer Flores put the Mets ahead in the third inning with a two-run double giving the Mets a slim 3-2 lead. The Mets tacked on another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Richard Lucas. After allowing two runs in the first two innings, Mets starter Scott Moviel settled down to hold the Marauders scoreless until the seventh inning. Moviel yielded a run in the seventh making it a 4-3 Mets lead. St. Lucie had an answer for Bradenton's run when Stefan Welch tripled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and scored on a sacrifice fly putting the Mets ahead by two runs at 5-3. Sammy Martinez came in to relieve Moviel in the eighth inning making his first appearance as a St. Lucie Met. Martinez retired all three batters he faced. The Mets turned to Rhiner Cruz with a 5-3 lead to try close out the Marauders in the ninth inning. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Cruz allowed back-to-back hits to pull the Marauders to within one at 5-4. Cruz then induced a fly ball for the final out of the game.
Moviel went seven innings allowing three runs, two earned on seven hits with four strikeout for his third win of the season. Stefan Welch led the Mets with three hits including two triples, two runs scored and an RBI. Wilmer Flores and Richard Lucas each drove in a pair in the 5-4 win.
The Mets close out their series with the Marauders Thursday night at Digital Domain Park. Jeurys Familia will make his final start of the 2010 season. Familia is 6-8 with a 5.28 ERA in 23 starts and leads the team with 129 strikeouts.
