Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

A night after running into baseball's top strikeout artist, the Hammerheads found life no easier against one of the Florida State League's top starters, as Charlotte's Joe Cruz silenced the Hammerheads bats in a 6-0 loss.

Cruz added to his league-leading win total, earning his 13th of the season by holding Jupiter to just three hits over six innings while striking out ten batters. Unlike Tuesday night, when the Hammerheads found some life after Matt Moore exited, Charlotte's Michael Jarman held Jupiter hitless over the game's final three innings.

On the other side of the game, Charlotte sent balls all over the Roger Dean Stadium field, with Hammerheads fielders continually unable to turn them into outs. Besides the three official errors, Charlotte found hits in both the infield and outfield on plays that Hammerhead fans have seen made throughout the season.

Most of Charlotte's offense came in the 4th inning, when the Stone Crabs knocked out two doubles and three singles to plate four of their runs. Tyler Bortnick's double scored Stephen Vogt and pushed Greg Sexton to third. Catcher Jake Jefferies then lined a base hit to score both Sexton and Bortnick.

Reid Fronk's single later in the inning would score Jefferies to give Charlotte a 5-0 lead after four frames. Fronk also scored Charlotte's first run of the game, reaching on a two-out single in the 3rd, stealing second base and scoring on Tim Beckham's single. Fronk would add two more base hits later in the game, including one that set up the game's final run on a Beckham sacrifice fly.

Jupiter will look to avoid the sweep Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium. To do so, they'll need a strong outing from a new face, as Daniel Mahoney makes his first start with the Hammerheads. He'll face Charlotte lefty Frank De Los Santos in a 7:05 p.m. game.
