DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Cubs (24-25) took game two from the Jupiter Hammerheads (14-34) in extras with the final score 4-3. Chris Archer pitched six shutout innings and Rebel Ridling added three hits including his walk-off double in the tenth inning.
The Cubs strung three hits together in the bottom of the second inning to score the first run of the game. Right fielder Kyler Burke led off with a single to center field and moved to third on a double down the line from designated hitter Jake Opitz. Second baseman David Macias brought home Burke with a single through the right side of the infield to give Daytona an early 1-0 lead.
The Cubs tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning off Hammerheads starter Johnny Dorn. The righty pegged left fielder Jose Valdez to start off the frame. Valdez moved up to second base on a ground out by Brett Jackson and scored on a single from third baseman DJ LeMahieu.
Cubs starter Chris Archer held Jupiter scoreless through six innings and only allowed one hit. The righty fanned eight in the start.
The D-Cubs would tack on another insurance run in the seventh inning when Ryan Flaherty doubled in the right field alley with two outs and later scored on an RBI single by Rebel Ridling to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead.
The Hammerheads fought back in the eighth and ninth innings scoring three runs off David Patton and Luke Sommer (1-1). Sommer came in with a two-run lead in the ninth in a save situation, but allowed two straight singles to Daniel Pertusati and Jacob Smolinski. Then with two outs in the inning Chris Dunn roped a solid single up the middle to tie the game 3-3.
The Daytona Cubs with the six-game win streak on the line came right back off Hammerhead reliever Jhan Marinez (0-1). Ryan Flaherty led things off with a walk and Rebel Ridling ended the ballgame with a double to deep left-center field.
The Daytona Cubs will host the Jupiter Hammerheads Saturday night for the third game of the four-game series with first pitch at 7:05. Come out and support the D-Cubs in their quest for eight consecutive wins and watch the post-game Fireworks display brought to you by Jon-Hall Automotive and WDSC PBS Channel 15.
