Iowa Cubs News Release
Memphis, TN - Brian Broderick pitched seven shutout innings helping the Memphis Redbirds (54-54) to a 5-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs (47-62) at Auto Zone Park tonight. The Cubs didn't score until there were two outs in the top of the ninth inning. The Redbirds lead this series 2-0.
Broderick (5-3) allowed four hits and walked three while getting the help of two double plays behind him. Cory Rauschenberger also got a double play to erase a leadoff walk in a scoreless eighth. The Cubs scored their lone run off Ron Mahay in the ninth. With one out, Scott Moore doubled and later scored on a two-out double by Ryan Flaherty. Flaherty also ruined a potential shutout with a two-out RBI double in the ninth inning on July 23 at Nashville.
Cubs' starter Jay Jackson allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits, walked four, and struck out two in 4.1 innings for the loss. The Redbirds took advantage of a Flaherty error to score two runs (one earned) in the first inning. Freddie Bynum added an RBI single and Bryan Anderson had a sacrifice fly in the third. Jackson came out with two men on in the fifth inning. Pete Kozma greeted Robert Coello with a single to bring in Bynum with the Redbirds' final run that was also charged to Jackson. Coello worked 1.2 scoreless innings. John Gaub and Blake Parker finished the game with a scoreless inning apiece. Jackson (5-11) now leads the league in losses.
With tonight's loss, the Cubs finish the month of July with a 9-19 record, tying a franchise record for the fewest wins in the month of July.
The Cubs and Redbirds continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. RH Casey Coleman (4-2, 4.18) will start for the Cubs against RH Blaine Boyer (0-1, 11.57) for the Redbirds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
