Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - Iowa scored five runs on five hits in the first two innings and never trailed in their 7-4 win over Memphis Thursday night at AutoZone Park.

Redbirds starter Blake Hawksworth endured his fourth straight rough outing. He allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits in five innings to take the loss. Hawksworth allowed the first three batters of the game to reach base and score for Iowa. Mike Fontenot's RBI-single put the Cubs on the board before sacrifice flies from Micah Hoffpauir and Casey McGehee put Iowa up 3-0. Fontenot's two-run homer in the seventh inning iced the game for the I-Cubs. Fontenot drove in four runs and finished a triple shy of the cycle, collecting three hits and scoring a pair of runs.

Rick Ankiel led the 'Birds with his first three-hit game of the year while Ryan Ludwick continued his hot streak with a pair of hits to extend his streak to 10 games.

Ben Howard picked up the win after 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and Clay Rapada earned his first save of the season with a perfect ninth inning. Mark Worrell fanned five batters in two innings for the Redbirds but allowed Fontenot's home run.

The loss snaps Memphis' season-best four-game win streak and also snaps Iowa's four-game losing streak. The Redbirds will send left-hander Troy Cate to the mound tomorrow night to make his first start of the year at AutoZone Park. Iowa will counter with J.R. Mathes in a game scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
