Portland Beavers News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. - Justin Germano (jur-MAH-no) worked seven innings in another strong start, Brett Dowdy had four hits and the Portland Beavers got all the runs they needed in the first inning in a 4-1 victory against the Tucson Sidewinders Thursday night at Tucson Electric Park.
Germano, the most consistent starter for Portland thus far, improved to 3-0 and lowered his season ERA to 2.25 by holding Tucson to one run, no walks and three hits while striking out five. After allowing a leadoff double in the first inning, Germano went on to retire 15 straight until the Sidewinders (9-10) were finally able to score in the sixth.
Germano benefited from a 4-0 lead in the first inning, just the fourth time this season the Beavers (9-11) scored first.
Scott Strickland worked the 1-2-3 eighth and Leo Rosales closed out things for his fourth save with the Beavers, who did not allow a walk while yielding just three hits.
Dowdy was 4-for-5 with a double to lead a 10-hit night for Portland, and Jack Cust stretched his hitting streak to 12 games.
Evan MacLane (1-2) gave up four runs (2 earned) and 10 hits in six innings for Tucson (9-10).
In the first, Dowdy singled and stole second to lead off. Craig Stansberry followed with a walk, and Paul McAnulty singled to load the bases. Cust reached on a force attempt, and three runs scored on the play as the result of two errors by shortstop Danny Richar. Two batters later, Vincent Sinisi's RBI single plated Cust.
Cust, leading or among the league leaders in several offensive categories, has driven in at least one run in nine of his last 11 games.
Rich Thompson doubled and scored on an RBI single from Richar in the sixth.
The two teams meet again Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
NOTES: Right-hander Mike Thompson, who began the year with San Diego, will make his first start of the year for Portland on Friday ... to make room for Thompson in the rotation, Opening Day starter Jack Cassel has been moved to the bullpen ... the Beavers are 5-3 versus left-handed starters ... Stansberry has scored in each of his last nine games ... after a winter storm forced the postponement of Portland's scheduled game at Colorado Springs Tuesday, Thursday's game was played under clear skies and 85-degree weather ... Portland improved to 4-8 on the road ... Strickland hasn't allowed a run in his last 7 1/3 innings over five appearances ... it was Germano's 43rd career start for Portland, tying him with Chris Oxspring for fifth-most in the team's seven seasons back in the PCL (since 2001).
