Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - Portland Beavers RHP Justin Germano allowed just three hits in seven innings of work to guide Portland to a 4-1 victory over Tucson on Thursday night. Sidewinders LHP Evan MacLane was credited with the loss after surrendering 4 runs (2 earned) in 6 innings. He gave up 10 hits and walked one.
The Beavers came out swinging in the top of the first inning. CF Brett Dowdy led off with a single to centerfield, and stole second base two pitches later. After 2B Craig Stansberry walked, 1B Paul McAnulty singled to right field, loading the bases.
With the bases juiced, Beavers LF Jack Cust hit a ground ball to Sidewinders Danny Richar, but Richar mishandled the ball, and then made an errant throw to second base, allowing all runners to advance. Three runs scored on the play, and Richar was credited with two errors. Two batters later, Portland RF Vince Sinisi singled to rightfield, scoring Cust and putting the Beavers on top 4-0.
Danny Richar led off the bottom of the first with a double to centerfield, but he was the Sidewinders hitter to reach base in the inning. Germano retired fifteen Sidewinders hitters in a row, until the top of the sixth inning when LF Rich Thompson doubled to leftfield. Two batters later, Richar singled in Rich Thompson to give the Sidewinders their first run of the night.
After Richar's RBI single, no runners reached base for either team except for a ninth inning walk by Sidewinders RHP Adam Bass to Stansberry. The 2:11 game was the Sidewinders shortest nine inning contest of the season. Tucson dropped to 9-10 on the season, and Portand jumped to 9-11.
The Sidewinders will be back at Tucson Electric Park on Friday night for the second game of the homestand against the Portland Beavers. RHP Yusmeiro Petit (1-1, 5.40) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Mike Thompson (0-0, 22.50) will start for the Beavers. First pitch is at 6:30. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:15.
