Iowa Cubs News Release

Oklahoma City, OK - The Iowa Cubs (30-36) rallied from down 6-0 after four innings to tie the game with a run in the top of the ninth, but fell 9-8 to the Oklahoma City RedHawks (35-29) on a walk-off single by Carlos Perez in the bottom of the 12th inning at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark tonight. The Cubs and RedHawks split this four game series as the Cubs fell to 0-5 in extra inning games this year.

The RedHawks built their early lead against Cubs' starter Nick Struck. Brandon Laird smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning and the RedHawks added five more runs in the fourth. Perez had a two-run double in the rally that featured three hits, two walks, two errors, a passed ball, a wild pitch, and a squeeze bunt. Struck was charged with six runs (five earned) on seven hits in five innings of work.

RedHawks' starter Brad Peacock was perfect through the first five innings before Dave Sappelt doubled to start the top of the sixth. Sappelt scored two batters later on a single by Brent Lillibridge to get the Cubs on the board. That was the only run allowed by Peacock, who struck out four in six innings of work.

The Cubs started their comeback in the top of the seventh against lefty reliever Kevin Chapman. Steve Clevenger, Brad Nelson, and Brian Bogusevic all singled to loaded the bases with one out. Sappelt followed with a ground ball to second base that Jose Martinez booted for an error that brought in one run. The RedHawks brought in Josh Zeid and Donnie Murphy greeted him with a two-run single that pulled the Cubs to within two at 6-4.

The RedHawks responded in the bottom of the seventh. Jake Elmore led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a triple by Brett Wallace. Justin Maxwell followed with an RBI single, extending the RedHawks lead to 8-4. After a flyout, Laird singled and Michael Bowden walked Jonathan Villar to load the bases. The Cubs brought in Hisanori Takahashi and he got Martinez to hit into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. Takahashi would work through 3.2 scoreless innings in relief.

The RedHawks brought in Alex Sogard to pitch the top of the eighth. After two quick outs, Junior Lake singled, Bogusevic walked, and Sappelt ripped a towering home run right inside the left field foul pole to pull the Cubs to within one at 8-7. It was Sappelt's second home run of the season and it gave him a season-high four RBI. After a base hit by Murphy, Sogard gave way to Rhiner Cruz and the inning ended when Murphy was thrown out trying to steal second base.

Cruz was back on the mound for the ninth. With one out, he walked Logan Watkins and Brett Jackson grounded a single through the right side that advanced Watkins to third for Clevenger. With Jackson running, Clevenger pulled a line drive to right that rolled all the way to the wall. Watkins scored to tie the game, but Jackson lost track of the ball as he got to second base, turned around, and started back to first. When he saw Clevenger running at him, he turned back around and made it to third, but didn't score on the double. After an intentional walk to Nelson, Jose Valdez came in and got Lake to pop out and struck out Bogusevic to end the inning and preserve the tie score.

Valdez pitched through the 11th inning and Eric Berger, the RedHawks' seventh pitcher of the game pitched a scoreless 12th. Marcus Hatley took over for Takahashi in the 11th inning and struck out two in his first inning of work. Laird led off the bottom of the 12th with a single. After Villar popped out on a bunt, Laird got to second on a wild pitch. Martinez lined out to right leaving it up to Perez. Hatley fell behind Perez 3-0, but came back with two strikes to fill the count. After two foul balls, Perez hit a soft line drive in right-center that brought in Laird with the game-winning run.

Hatley (1-1) suffered the loss while Berger (3-1) was credited with the win.

The Cubs return home to host the Omaha Storm Chasers on Friday night at Principal Park. Game time is 7:05 and the gates will open at 5:35 for a Mediacom Fireworks Friday. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed at iowacubs.com, with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
