Cubs Comeback Effort Falls Short in Offensive Exhibition

Iowa Cubs News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The Iowa Cubs (9-6) scored seven unanswered runs against the St. Paul Saints (7-7), scoring three in the sixth and four more in the seventh, but it wasn't enough, as the home Saints took the series finale, 13-11.

St. Paul pushed across one run in each of the first two innings, and then put a six spot up in the third frame. The Saints sent 11 batters to the dish, tallied a walk, seven hits, two doubles, and a three-run shot by Yunior Severino. It was the first time the Saints had batted around this season.

Down 8-0, seven of which were charged to Cubs starter Sam McWilliams, Iowa pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth on a single from BJ Murray Jr. that drove in Alexander Canario and David Peralta.

After another St. Paul run in the bottom of the fourth, the second one charged to reliever Riley Thompson, the Cubs got another run from a Canario double that plated MLB-rehabber Patrick Wisdom.

St. Paul put three up in the bottom of the fifth, all charged to Thompson, two of which were Severino's fourth and fifth RBI of the afternoon (he only had 2 RBI this season coming into Sunday).

The Cubs bats came to life if the sixth and seventh innings, counting five hits and five walks combined, to cut the deficit to 12-10. But the deficit would remain two as the two sides each pushed across one more run before the final out was recorded.

Murray Jr., Wisdom, Canario, Darius Hill, Owen Caissie, Bryce Windham, and Chase Strumpf all recorded at least one RBI, and every Cubs batter except for Caissie recorded at least one hit. Strumpf blasted Iowa's only long ball of the afternoon in the top of the ninth.

McWilliams was tagged with his first loss of the season and Saints reliever Hobie Harris got his first victory despite being tagged for three earned runs.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- The Cubs' 11 runs are a season-high and their 13 hits ties a season-high.

- The Saints' 13 runs are a season high by five runs and their 17 hits are a season-high by nine hits . Six Runs is a season-high for runs in a single inning.
