South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN: The South Bend Cubs had a chance to sweep the Lansing Lugnuts going into a key four-game series against Bowling Green starting tomorrow. It took extra innings, but the Lugnuts rallied to beat South Bend with two key runs scored in the top of 10th. The Cubs still picked up the series win, but their wild card lead over Lansing sits at three games.

After a lopsided win last night, Friday night's finale was neck-and-neck through much of the night. The Cubs scored first for the second consecutive day with two runs plated in the bottom of the 1st inning. Cole Roederer continued his hot stretch in the series and brought home Clayton Daniel and Andy Weber on a single to lead 2-0. Roederer finished his day 2/5 with two RBI.

Lansing was persistent and kept themselves in the game with a run in each of the 2nd, 4th, and 6th innings. Right-hander Sean Wymer was key after he struggled in his past two starts against the Cubs. Wymer gave up three runs in the first two innings, but finished his night with five complete frames and did not give up a run after the 2nd.

In the late innings, Brandon Hughes made his 2019 pitching debut at home and quieted the Lansing bats in two shutout innings. Hughes, who played in South Bend as an outfielder last season, looked confident and comfortable with a low-90s fastball in his appearance.

Now at a 3-3- tie, the game went to extra innings. With a runner automatically at second base, right-hander Sean Barry returned for a second inning on the mound after working a scoreless top of the 9th. On a one strike pitch, Midwest League hit leader Otto Lopez smacked a triple to drive in two runs. It was a 5-3 Lugnuts lead going to the bottom of the 10th.

Andy Weber took his spot at second base to start the bottom half of the 10th. Set to lead-off the inning was designated hitter Nelson Maldonado. The Cubs cleanup man lofted a single into right-center to push Weber to third base. With runners at the corners, Lansing Manager Dallas McPherson made a change to bring in Cre Finfrock from the bullpen.

Finfrock punched out Nelson Velazquez and Cole Roederer, but then allowed an RBI single to Jake Slaughter to make it a 5-4 game. With the tying run at third base, and the winning run at first, Fidel Mejia bounced out to second to end the game and Lansing salvaged the final contest of the series.

With the loss, the Cubs fall to 71-57 on the season and will begin their four-game set against Bowling Green tomorrow night. First pitch from Bowling Green Ballpark is set for 7:35 PM with right-hander Cam Sanders on the mound for South Bend.
