Crushers walk-off to third straight win

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, used a lights out pitching performance from starter Nick Deeg and some extra inning magic to win their third game in a row on Wednesday afternoon by the score of 2-1.

For the second straight day, Lake Erie (3-2) got a solid outing from their starting pitcher. Deeg worked seven innings, which was the most for a Crushers starter in 2018. The lefty struck out eight and only walked one while only allowing three singles.

CornBelters starter, Jacinto Garcia went five innings and held the Lake Erie offense to just one run on six hits. That one run came in the fifth inning. With one out, Dalton Wheat doubled and moved to third on a groundout by Dane Hutcheon. That brought up Tuesday's hero, Kevin Lachance. The Crushers shortstop lined a ball up the middle that knocked the glove off of Garcia. The ball deflected towards second and Lechance beat the throw, making it 1-0.

Manager Cam Roth went to his bullpen in the eighth and brought in Mason Klotz (1-0). The right-hander allowed a couple of hits in the inning, including an RBI single by David Martinez, tying the game at one. Klotz ended the inning with two strikeouts.

After a scoreless ninth inning for both teams, Normal (1-4) loaded the bases in the 10th against Klotz. With two outs, Klotz got Chris Iriart to groundout which kept the game tied.

In the bottom of the tenth, CornBelters reliever Kuehl McEachern (0-1) surrendered a leadoff walk to Doug Trimble. Catcher, Brian Mayer executed the sacrifice bunt, moving Trimble into scoring position. With one out, McEachern tried a pickoff move towards second, but his throw went into centerfield. Trimble raced into third on the error.

With Wheat at the plate and the winning run on third, the CornBelters brought the infield in. Wheat smoked a ball towards first and past the Normal first baseman. Trimble scored the game winning run. It was the first walk-off for Lake Erie since August 29, 2017 when the Crushers defeated Windy City.

Wheat finished the game 2-4 while Lachance and Aaron Hill extended their hitting streaks to five games. The Crushers pitching staff struck out 10, just a day after striking out 15 on Tuesday.

The Crushers go for the series sweep tomorrow at 11:05 AM when Donald Murray (0-1) opposes Scott Sebald (1-0). The Washington Wild Things come to Sprenger Stadium this weekend.
