Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, benefitted from a pair of huge innings on Friday night at Sprenger Health Care Stadium, as they won their fifth straight game with a 10-0 victory over the Washington Wild Things.
The victory for the Crushers (5-2) marked their second straight shutout and was their fifth straight win after starting the year with a pair of losses. The loss for the Wild Things (4-3) was their second on the road this season.
Lake Erie sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five times on four hits while capitalizing on one error in the bottom of the third. After Ryan Castellanos (0-1) retired the first seven batters he faced, he hit Bryan DeLaRosa with a pitch, and Dalton Wheat made him pay three pitches later with a RBI triple to the left-center gap, giving the Crushers a 1-0 lead. Cameron Newell followed with a run scoring single back up the middle to score Wheat, giving the Crushers a 2-0 advantage.
Sean Hurley added to the Lake Erie two batters later, as he smashed a two-run homer to left, his second of the season. Conner Simonetti followed with a single to center, and he scored the final run of the inning as Dane Hutcheon reached on an error.
The Crushers used the long ball to add to their advantage in the bottom of the fourth. DeLaRosa and Newell both reached on singles, setting up Kevin LaChance's three-run homer to left, his second of the season. Moments later, Hurley struck again, with his second homer of the game, a solo homer to left, giving the Crushers a 9-0 lead.
Lake Erie added one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Hurley came home on Dane Hutcheon's RBI single to left.
Alex Romero (1-1) tossed six scoreless innings and allowed just three hits while fanning four in a winning effort. Luis Cohen and Branden Nunn combined to toss three scoreless innings of one hit relief. Castellanos took the loss after allowing eight runs, seven earned on seven hits over 3.1 innings of action.
Five Crushers hit safely multiple times on the night. Hurley led the way with three hits, going 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Newell, LaChance, DeLaRosa and Wheat all hit safely twice.
The Crushers will continue their three game series with the Wild Things at Sprenger Stadium on Saturday night. Right-hander Juan Perez (1-0, 3.60) will get the start for the Crushers and the Wild Things will counter with left-hander Frank Trimarko (1-0, 1.58). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
