Crushers Swept by Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Illinois - The Lake Erie Crushers were downed 4-1 by the Schaumburg Boomers Sunday afternoon to stretch their losing streak to eight straight games. A must-win series ended in being on the wrong end of a sweep for the Crushers.

After a scoreless first four innings, the Crushers left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth. Schaumburg would strike first in its half of the fifth frame. An error scored Clint Hardy, which was followed up by an RBI base hit off the bat of Chase Dawson scoring Nick Oddo.

Lake Erie slashed the deficit in half in the sixth inning on a Connor Oliver sacrifice fly into center field. That play brought home Trevor Achenbach.

Following the seventh inning stretch, Dawson sent Hardy home on a sacrifice fly to Isaac Benard patrolling right field.

The two-run lead was extended in the back-half of the eighth inning. A fielder's choice allowed Matt Bottcher to accelerate home to get the score to 4-1.

That score would hold true and send the Crushers packing for home after failing to secure a win on the six-game road trip.

Tyson Cronin (2-3) put forth a superb effort on the mound. He went six strong innings, surrendering two runs on three hits accompanied by two walks and a strikeout. Cronin received minimal offensive scoring from the guys in purple leading to him receiving the loss.

Andrew Dean (3-5) had an impressive showing as well for the Boomers. His 5 2/3 innings with a run on five hits and four strikeouts were enough to claim the win in the matinee finale.

Thomas Nicoll sat down the Crushers in order in the top of the ninth to finish off the sweep and record his first save this year.

Lake Erie has dug itself into a hole just past the halfway mark of the season. The Crushers now own a 24-28 record and sit 5.5 games behind Schaumburg.

Mercy Health Stadium will be the venue of the next seven games for the Grapest Show on Turf. The homestand kicks off at 5:05 pm on Tuesday with a doubleheader lined up against the Gateway Grizzlies. Following a four-game set with Gateway, the Florence Y'alls will pay their first and only visit to Avon this season for the weekend series.
