Lake Erie Crushers News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - In what was by far their finest offensive performance of the season, the Lake Erie Crushers scored 17 times on 18 hits on Tuesday evening to take the series opener at Consol Energy Park, in a 17-3 drubbing of the Washington Wild Things.
The victory for the Crushers (22-30) was their first in four tries in Washington this season, while the loss for the Wild Things (24-31) was their third in their last four games.
The 17-run output was far and away the most the Crushers have scored this season, and the 18 hits produced on the night were also a season high. Even more intriguing, is the fact that they scored all of those runs in the first three innings.
Lake Erie started the party with an eight-run first inning, where they pounded out seven hits, and sent 13 batters to the plate. Austin Prott immediately continued his on base streak with a double in his first at bat of the night. Immediately following Prott's double, were back-to-back RBI two-baggers from Chandler Brock and Jose Barraza, giving the Crushers a 2-0 lead.
Later in the inning, Juan Sanchez reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Barraza to score, and Boo Vazquez followed with a RBI triple, and Vazquez scored moments later on Emmanuel Quiles's RBI single. Kevin Zak and Trevor Stevens both singled as well to load the bases for Brock, who cleared the bases with a three-run double to cap the first inning.
Lake Erie scored two more runs in the second, before erupting for seven runs in the third. Stevens walked with the bases loaded to plate the first run in the top of the second, and Prott brought the next run home on a sac fly RBI.
The Lake Erie offense wasn't done, as they scored seven times on five hits to take a 17-0 lead in the third. Even more impressive, was the fact that they did it all with two outs. The rally began on Zak's two-run single to plate Barraza and Vazquez. Stevens followed with a RBI base hit, and two batters later, Brock brought in two more runs with a base hit, giving him six RBIs on the night. Barraza finished the inning with a two-run double.
Washington scratched a pair of runs across in the bottom of the fifth inning, and one more in the seventh but it was too little, too late.
Hunter Adkins (3-4) took the victory for the Crushers, allowing three runs on four hits with a season high, 10-strikeouts over 6.1 innings of action. Washington's Ernie Zaragoza (5-4) took the loss, after only recording one out in the top of the first inning, and allowed seven runs on six hits. Tyler Ferguson replaced Zaragoza, and allowed 10 runs on seven hits over the next 2.1 innings of work.
Every Crusher hit safely at least once, while six Crushers hit safely multiple times. Brock, Vazquez and Quiles led the way with three hits each. Brock paced the Crushers in the two-hole with six RBI's on the night. Prott, Barraza and Zak each contributed with a pair of hits. Prott has now reached safely in 20 consecutive games. All but one Crusher in the starting lineup drove in at least one run on the night, and scored at least once as well.
The Crushers will continue their three game series with the Washington Wild Things at Consol Energy Park on Wednesday night. Right-hander Zach Morton (2-1, 3.52) will start for the Crushers, while the Wild Things will counter with lefty Richie Mirowski (0-2, 3.55). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
