Slammers Shutout by CornBelters 5-0

Evansville, IN- The Joliet Slammers (22-33) offense sputters in a 5-0 defeat to the Normal CornBelters (31-24) on Tuesday night.

The Slammers best chance to score came in the first inning against pitcher Rob Blanc. DH Nate Robert walked with one out before swiping second. He would later move to third before being tagged out while trying to score on a wild pitch.

The CornBelters scored first, putting a three-spot on the board in the second inning against Adam Panayotovich. LF Sam Judah led off with a double to right. With one out, CF Cameron Monger walked. With two on, the number nine hitter, catcher Jim Vahalik crushed a three-run homer to left-center. The CornBelters led 3-0 after the second inning.

Normal added to their lead in the fourth inning. RF Ozney Guillen led off with a double and reached third on a throwing error by C John Cannon. After Monger walked, Vahalik topped a groundball towards short. Guillen came around to score before Monger broke up the double play, giving the CornBelters a 4-0 lead. Panayotovich retired the next two batters to get out of the inning.

The CornBelters scored once more in the seventh against new Slammers pitcher Dan Tobik. With one out, 3B Richard Lucas hammered a solo homer over the centerfield fence, putting the Belters on top 5-0.

The Slammers offense never got going in the defeat, only mustering two hits. It's just the third time the Slammers have been shutout this season. Blanc (1-0 earned the win in his debut with the CornBelters. Panayotovich (0-1) took the loss. Mike Garza extended his road hitting streak to 19 games to earn our Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game Honors. The Slammers take on the CornBelters in game two on Wednesday with the first pitch at 6:35pmCT.
