Lake Erie Crushers News Release

JOLIET, Ill. -- The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, dropped another game to the Joliet Slammers, 5-3, as Boo Vazquez hit two home runs and the Crushers pitching staff allowed five runs for the third game in a row.

The Crushers (12-9) are now 1-4 on this road trip and 4-9 on the road, overall, after the loss. For the Slammers (13-11), the win marks their second consecutive series win and they have now won six of their last eight games.

The Crushers scored first, for the second day in a row, in the top of the second inning. Juan Avila reached first base on a dropped third strike by Slammers catcher Joe Staley. With two outs, Parks Jordan then hit a two-run home run, his first of the season, to right field, putting the Crushers up 2-0.

Joliet did not wait long to respond as Staley walked to lead off the bottom of the second inning. He would score all the way from first base as Melvin Rodriguez hit an RBI double to the wall in left-center field. Rodriguez would move to third on a ground out and then score on a Nico Zych single to right field.

The Slammers would take the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run to right field off the bat of Boo Vazquez, putting the Slammers up 3-2.

Lake Erie would tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Parker Norris and Jordan walked. Norris then stole third, his second steal of the season. Max Casper came up and hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Norris.

Vazquez would ensure that the Slammers would win their fifth straight game, as he hit his second home run of the game, sixth of the season, to right field with two outs in the seventh inning. The two-run homer came after Alfredo Rodriguez singled in the prior at-bat.

Todd Kibby (2-2) started the game for the Crushers and was saddled with the loss. He went seven innings, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out four hitters. Devin Malone pitched the bottom of the eighth inning and did not allow a hit or a run.

Kaleb Ort started for the Slammers and went five innings, giving up four hits and three runs. Four Slammers came out of the bullpen and did not allow a run. Brent Choban (1-3) picked up the win as he went an inning, giving up a walk and striking out two Crushers hitters. Kevin McNorton (5) pitched in the ninth inning, picking up the save.

The Crushers will finish the series on Thursday as they take on the Joliet Slammers at Silver Cross Field. For the Crushers, righty Steven Hagen (1-0, 1.17) will take the mound. The Slammers will start left-hander Spencer Medick (3-0, 4.50). The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
