Slammers Have Win Streak Snapped with Loss to Crushers

June 9, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
Joliet Slammers News Release

Joliet, IL- The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy had no problem scoring runs in the first two games of the series, scoring a combined 10 runs, but that was not the story Thursday, June 9. Joliet's five-game win streak was snapped after the Lake Erie Crushers beat them 10-2.

The Slammers had everything clicking in the previous five games from pitching to hitting. Over the course of the win streak the Slammers scored 30 runs and allowed just 17.

Joliet has also shown tons of power this season, especially during the win streak. The Slammers hit 10 home runs over the five games. They have hit 24 home runs this season, which has them tied for the league-lead. Boo Vazquez has hit six home runs this season, which is second most in the Frontier League.

Thursday night's game started as a pitcher's dual between the Slammers' Spencer Medick, who had yet another strong outing and Steve Hagen of the Lake Erie Crushers, but a four-run seventh inning for the Crushers put away the Slammers.

Medick allowed one run on five hits in six innings. He also struck out four batters in the game. Medick's strong outing only resulted in a no-decision. Anthony Sequeria replaced Medick for the start of the seventh inning, and that is when the Crushers scored their four runs. Sequeria was charged with the loss.

Sequeria allowed the Crushers to load the bases after a single, and back-to-back walks with one out. Max Casper grounded out to Nico Zych for what was almost an inning-ending double play, but after stepping on third for the second out, Zych threw the ball away at first base allowing two runs to score.

Connor Oliver took advantage of the error as he homered in the next at bat to give Lake Erie a 5-1 lead.

Lake Erie did not stop there as they went on to score five more runs off Chris Rice in the eighth inning, putting the game out of reach for the Slammers, and ending their win streak.

The Crushers got on the board in the third inning on a single to left field with one out, but a great throw by Phil Bates in left field prevented Max Casper from scoring from second. The Slammers also caught Carlos Avila in a run-down trying to stretch his single into a double.

Joliet tied the game at one run a piece in the sixth inning off a single by Marc Flores, scoring Carter Bell, who doubled right before Flores' at bat.

Despite the loss, the Slammers still have a winning record at 13-12, putting them in third place in the East Division.

Thursday's Merchants and Manufacturers player of the game is Spencer Medick for pitching six innings and allowing just one run.

The Slammers will head to Traverse City Friday, June 10 to take on the Beach Bums in the start of a three-game series.
