June 9, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - For the second straight game, the Traverse City Beach Bums(8-15) lost a 2-1 decision to the Schaumburg Boomers(10-14), giving up the winning run in the ninth inning.
The Beach Bums also scored first for the second straight game and tonight it was in the second inning. With two outs, Giancarlo Brugnoni walked then Brandon Thomasson singled. Gaby Juarbe, in his second game as a Bum, laced an RBI double to left to give them a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Paul Kronenfeld led off for Schaumburg with a double. After moving to third on a wild pitch, and two outs later, Kronenfeld scored when Josh Gardiner singled up the middle, to tie the game.
The Beach Bums threatened in the fifth inning when Casey Rodrigue and Steven Patterson led off with singles. Rodrigue then moved to third on a Vargas fly ball to right. Will Kengor stepped up and hit a grounder to the right side of the infield. Patterson was out at second but the turn to first was late as Kengor beat the throw and Rodrigue crossed the plate. Unfortunately for the Beach Bums, the run would not count as Patterson was ruled to have illegally interfered with the fielder and the double play was awarded to Schaumburg to end the inning.
Shawn Payne led off the top of the ninth for the Boomers with a double off the top of the wall. After moving to third on a groundout, he came in to score when James Keller hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center. Jeff DeBlieux set up to throw but it was just late and Schaumburg took a 2-1 lead.
Brandon Thomasson legged out a broken bat infield hit to start the bottom of the frame. He was replaced at first by Tyler Peterson. Peterson was sacrificed to second by Juarbe, then moved to third on a Jeff DeBlieux groundout. He was stranded ninety feet away as Casey Rodrigue grounded out to end the game.
Dylan Stoops was great on the hill for the Bums, going seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, two walks, and struck out nine. Schaumburg's Kagen Hopkins matched with him going five innings, spreading out eight hits, allowing one run and striking out four. Evan Boyd earned the win, improving to 1-0, as he went the final two innings and struck out three. Andrew Brockett suffers the loss, dropping to 2-2.
The Beach Bums will look to regroup, continuing this six game home stand with a three game set against the Joliet Slammers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 6:45pm, on 101.9- The Bay.
