Kimes Throws Gem as Grizzlies Fall to Miners

Sauget, Ill. - Another big turnout at GCS Ballpark on Thursday night wasn't enough to spur the Grizzlies' bats as they fell to the Southern Illinois Miners, 4-1. LHP Corey Kimes dazzled through seven innings while allowing just one run in front of more than 5,400 fans at GCS Ballpark.
Gateway struck first for the second time in the series when Steve Pascual picked up his first RBI in a Grizzlies' uniform with a single to right field against Miners starter Jarrett Miller (1-2). The hit gave Gateway a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The Grizzlies (9-16) didn't struggle for baserunners, as they would get the leadoff runner in scoring position with no outs during four separate innings. Gateway stranded 14 runners on-base during the course of the game.
The Miners would tie the game in the top of the fourth when Corey Kimes gave up his first hit of the game, a leadoff double to Julius Gaines. That was followed with a single by the designated hitter Alex De Leon, which tied the game at 1-1.
Kimes was relieved by RHP Trevor Richards (1-3) in the eighth, but Richards would allow the go-ahead run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly. Southern Illinois tacked on two more later in the inning from an error and a pair of singles. All three runs in the frame were unearned.
Meanwhile, the Miners (14-9) enjoyed the work of Miller as he worked his way out of multiple jams to produce a quality start. He allowed only one run through seven innings with six strikeouts.
Southern Illinois received another good performance from their bullpen to close the game. RHP Jake Cose picked up the save, his third of the series.
The Grizzlies finished with ten hits, including two a piece for Logan Davis and Vin Guglietti.
Gateway continues their six-game homestand with a series opener against the Normal CornBelters on Friday evening. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
