Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Hagerstown, MD - Kyle Crick delivered his finest start of the year for the Augusta GreenJackets - six scoreless innings of one-hit baseball - as the GreenJackets broke a three-game losing skid with a 4-1 win over the Hagerstown Suns on Sunday afternoon.
In his six scoreless innings, Crick (1-1) had issues with command. He walked three and hit two batters, but his eight strikeouts equal the career-high that he set in his last start on Sunday against the Suns. He got out of trouble in the first with a strikeout-caught stealing double play. In the fourth, he walked two with one out in the inning, but got out of the jam on a line drive double play.
The GreenJackets supported Crick with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. Augusta loaded the bases with three hits - two of which didn't leave the infield. Michael Mergenthaler hit a grounder to second that looked as though it might end the inning, but Hagerstown second baseman Hendry Jimenez's errant throw allowed two runs to score to give the GreenJackets the early 2-0 edge.
Mergenthaler was again present when the GreenJackets stretched the lead to 3-0. His first home run of the year - a fourth-inning solo shot - pushed the Augusta lead to three.
The Suns scored their lone run of the game with two outs in the eighth inning. Matt Skole's RBI single cut the Augusta lead to 3-1 as Hagerstown cashed in on back-to-back walks to open the frame. Steven Neff was able to get Billy Burns to ground out to end the inning and Hagerstown's best scoring threat. The GreenJackets got the run back in the ninth on a two-out RBI double from Jose Cuevas to reclaim a three-run lead.
Cody Hall allowed the leadoff man in the ninth to reach on a base hit before picking up a strikeout and inducing a ground ball for a game-ending double play. Hall earned his league-leading seventh save with that effort.
Taylor Hill (3-2) took the loss for the Suns, allowing three runs - one earned - on five hits and a walk while striking out two.
The GreenJackets will send Paul Davis (2-0, 2.25) the mound on Monday night in search of their second straight win. Hagerstown will counter with fellow righty Wirkin Estevez (3-1, 7.36).First pitch from Hagerstown comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
