Crew Mutually Agrees to Part Ways with Midfielder Alvaro Rey
July 15, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS -The Columbus Crew today announced that it has mutually agreed to part ways with midfielder Alvaro Rey.
"Alvaro is returning to his native Spain for personal reasons, and while this is a difficult decision for all involved, we want to support him and his family under trying circumstances. Even though we are fully immersed in building a strong team, there are some things in life that take preceden ce, and ultimately this was the right thing to do for Alvaro and his family," said Crew Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. "We pride ourselves on being a player-first organization - where players are valued and treated with respect and professionalism - and this is an example of that philosophy, even if it leaves us short-handed for the time being."
Rey made two appearances with the Crew this season after arriving in Columbus ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup break in a deal with Toronto FC. The 25-year-old Spaniard has made 22 total appearances in Major League Soccer since 2013.
The Black & Gold return to action this week with two home matches at Crew Stadium, beginning with a visit from defending MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday, July 16 (7:30 p.m. ET / Time Warner Cable SportsChannel), followed by a clash with fellow Eastern Conference side Montreal Impact on Saturday, July 19 (7:30 p.m. ET / Time Warner Cable SportsChannel).
